BG3 Obscured Item Sets – Obscured in Shadows

Welcome to the Obscured Item Sets Guide for Baldur’s Gate 3. In this guide we will list the various equipment available in BG3 that triggers when the wearer performs a certain action while obscured in Darkness (including magical Darkness). In this guide we use the term “dark areas” several times – this refers to areas that are either Lightly Obscured or Heavily Obscured, unless stated otherwise.
These items are perfect for stealth builds such as the Rogue, however some of them are more suited to other classes such as Shadowheart with the Cleric class.
Please note that some parts of this guide contain mild story spoilers, as we mention how to obtain the items on the list.

Shar’s Spear of Evening
Shar’s Spear of Evening is a Legendary spear that empowers the wielder when they fight in darkness.
While wielding the spear, you gain Advantage on Saving Throws while you are lightly or heavily obscured. If the weapon strikes an enemy who is lightly or heavily obscured, they will take 1d6 bonus damage. In addition, you are able to create clouds of Magical Darkness at will and gain immunity to being Blinded, allowing you to debuff enemies with these clouds while being unhindered yourself.
Finally, if your character has Proficiency with spears, they also gain access to Edge of Darkness, a special weapon action that creates a small cloud of magical Darkness around the enemy when you strike them.
(Plot Spoiler) Shar’s Spear of Evening is rewarded to Shadowheart during the quest The Chosen of Shar, if she decides to kill the Nightsong. This quest takes place in the Gauntlet of Shar in Act II, which is entered via the Grand Mausoleum.
Ring of Twilight
The Ring of Twilight is a rare ring that buffs the wearer when they are in a dark area.
With the ring equipped, your Armour Class is increased by +1 when you are fighting in a dark area. This isn’t a huge buff, but it’s still useful for any stealth build and it can be useful on pretty much any character, especially in parts of the game where there aren’t many light sources.
The Ring of Twilight is located in a chest inside an old tower in the Ruined Battlefield area of Act II.
The Shadespell Circlet
The Shadespell Circlet is an uncommon helmet that buffs spellcasters who cast a spell from a dark area.
While wearing this item, all of your spells gain a +1 bonus to Difficulty Class when you cast them from a dark area – this means that the number an enemy has to roll for their Saving Throw to be successful is increased by +1 for all of your spells, making their effects harder to resist.
The Shadespell Circlet is sold by Omeluum in the Myconid Colony, in the Underdark (Act I). Please note that you must complete Omeluum’s Investigate the Parasite quest before you can trade with him.
Covert Cowl
The Covert Cowl is an uncommon helmet that makes it easier to roll a critical when you’re attacking from a dark area.
The wearer of this item needs to roll 1 less in order to score a Critical Hit, as long as they are stood in a dark area. This can stack with other similar effects, such as the passive feature from the Champion subclass. As an extra bonus, the wearer also gets a +1 bonus to their Dexterity Saving Throws.
This is a very good item for a stealth build such as the Rogue, or the Ranger. Unfortunately this item isn’t a great fit for Way of Shadow Monks, because it requires Light Armour Proficiency.
The Covert Cowl is dropped by a Meenlock in the cellar of Last Light Inn, in Act II.
Dark Justiciar Helm
The Dark Justiciar Helm is an uncommon helmet that buffs the wearer’s Saving Throws when they are obscured.
When the wearer is in a dark area, they gain a +1 bonus to all Saving Throws. You also get a further +1 bonus to Constitution Saving Throws, regardless of whether or not you are obscured.
This item can be found several times in the game in areas that have, or used to have a Sharran influence. The earliest chance to obtain it is on the skeletal remains of Dark Justiciars found in the Grymforge, Act I.
Dark Justiciar Helmet
The Dark Justiciar Helmet, not to be confused with the previous item on this list, is a very rare helmet that offers several decent bonuses to the wearer.
It has the same effect as the Covert Cowl – decreasing your Critical Hit requirement by 1 whenever you are stood in a dark area. In addition, you also gain a +1 bonus to Saving Throws against Spells at all times, and a +1 bonus to Constitution Saving Throws at all times. This is a pretty useful Helmet in general, especially if you are playing stealthily or at the very least actively seeking out (or creating) dark areas to fight in. It does require Medium Armour Proficiency, however.
The Dark Justiciar Helmet is located in a Gilded Chest inside the Gauntlet of Shar, in Act II.
Dark Justiciar Mail
The Dark Justiciar Mail is an uncommon Medium Armour chest piece that increases the wearer’s damage while they are obscured.
When wearing this armour, attacks made while you are in a Dark area will deal an extra 1d4 Necrotic Damage. This isn’t a huge amount of damage, but it’s still useful especially in the early game when enemies tend to have less health and you generally have less damage options than you do at higher levels.
The Dark Justiciar Mail is found on some of the Dark Justiciar skeletons in the Grymforge, in Act I.
Shadeclinger Armour
The Shadeclinger Armour is a rare Light Armour chest piece that improves the wearer’s Stealth.
While wearing this armour, you gain a +1 bonus to your Stealth skill and when in a dark area you’ll get Advantage on all Saving Throws. Advantage means you roll two dice instead of one, and you pick the dice that rolled the highest for your result. This considerably improves your chance of a high roll.
Shadeclinger Armour is sold by Quartermaster Talli at Last Light Inn, Act II.
Dark Justiciar Half-Plate
The Dark Justiciar Half-Plate is a Medium Armour chest piece. It has two versions, a rare version and a very rare version. The rare version can be obtained by anyone, while the very rare version can only be obtained with a certain path (potential plot spoilers below)
Rare Version
The Rare version of the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate gives the wearer Advantage on Stealth checks when you are obscured. You also gain Advantage on Consitution Saving Throws, and you can cast Shield of Faith as a bonus action, with gives a +2 bonus to Armour Class while you maintain Concentration on the spell.
This version of the armour is located in the Gauntlet of Shar in Act II, in the same area where you find the Spear of Night.
Very Rare Version
The Very Rare version of the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate has all of the same effects as the rare version. The Shield of Faith spell is renamed to Shar’s Aegis with this armour, but it is basically exactly the same spell with a new name. While you have either Sheild of Faith or Shar’e Aegis active on you with this armour equipped, you take 2 less damage from all attacks, and reflect 1d4 Necrotic damage back to your attackers.
As one would expect, this is basically a more powerful version of the Rare Dark Justiciar Plate, and it makes for ideal armour for a Cleric like Shadowheart, however it works fine for basically any character that can use Medium Armour.
This version of the armour is rewarded to Shadowheart for killing Nightsong in Act II. If you take any other path, you will not be able to get the very rare version of the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate.
Viconia’s Priestess Robe
Viconia’s Priestess Robe is a rare Clothing item that improves the wearer’s Stealth and also gives a couple of defensive buffs.
The wearer gains Advantage on Stealth checks whenever they are Obscured. They also receive a +1 bonus to Armour Class and gain a +2 bonus to all Saving Throws when they have Shield of Faith active on them. The latter two effects apply at all times, regardless of whether or not you are in a dark area.
Viconia’s Priestess Robe is dropped by Viconia DeVir in Sharran Enclave below the House of Grief, Act III.
