ESO Scribing Guide – All Details and Quest Walkthrough

In this all-encompassing ESO Scribing Guide, you will find out how to unlock the Scribing System, explanations and locations of Grimoires and Scripts. How to unlock each script, location info and everything else you will ever need to know about Scribing ESO. For updated builds please visit the ESO Builds overview page. ESO Skill Styling is also another new feature in the Gold Road Chapter.
ESO Scribing introduces new unlockable skills to the existing skill lines, which can be modified to your liking. For example, you can now create your own Damage Shield with (almost) any effect you want. Or a new AoE explosion skill, almost anything is possible!
The ESO Scribing System was created by Ulfsild, also known as Archmage Ulfsild the Evergreen, Warrior-witch of Kyne’s Aegis, Clever woman of the Druadach and The Pale’s priestess of Jhunal. She created the Scholarium and perfected the art of Scribing. Scribing itself is an art developed with the collaboration of powerful beings called Luminaries. Ulfsild saw magic itself and developed the art of shaping magic via ink, parchment, and quill.
Luminaries in ESO are beings of pure magic that channel magic to the altar, utterly unique, like beams of light emanating from the face of Magnus himself. Each has chosen a shape that suits their personality, following goals and interests entirely of their own choosing. If you ask them where they came from, each of them will give you a different answer. Luminaries understand magic in a way mortals never could and their power freely given will allow you to access the arcane mysteries others could not dream of.

How do you scribe in ESO?
The ESO Scribing System might seem complicated at first, but it will become easier to understand as you delve more into it. What you need is a skill to customize (Grimoire), three Scripts (Focus, Signature and Affix) for the effects and Luminous Ink (crafting currency) to decide what your new skill does. Scribing does not have it’s own skill line and instead you use the system at the Scribing Altar in The Scholarium.
As there is no skill line, you unlock more of the system by completing Luminary Wings which unlock their account-wide Sigils. You will find your Scribed skills and grimoires in the new Scribing tab that is added to your skill assignment window. Unlock requirements and how to get Grimoires, Scripts and Luminous Ink are detailed further down on the guide on their respective categories.
You can buy the the Scribing Altar for your home in Update 43! Read our Scribing Altar Guide to learn how to obtain it.

You can use the ESO Scribing Simulator to test different combinations!
Grimoires for Scribing in ESO
Grimoires are the skills you scribe your effects into. No new skill lines are being added to the game so each Grimoire you start with has been added to the existing; Weapon, Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, Assault and Soul Magic skill lines.
How expensive are Grimoires?
Grimoires costs 50,000 gold when you buy it for the first time, but the cost is lowered to 10,000 gold for your other characters. Exceptions are listed below.
- Soul Burst 10,000 gold. It’s awarded to you after completing the final quest in the Scribing quest line and is discounted for all alt characters.
- Wield Soul Can not be bought. Every character will need to complete the Scribing Tutorial quest which awards the Wield Soul skill.
Where do I get Grimoires?
The Grimoire and Script Vendor Chronicler Firandil sells all the Grimoires in The Scholarium.
Requirements to unlock Grimoires
- Complete “The Wing of the Indrik” questline
- Earn the “Apprentice”-Achievement on the Grimoires skill line.
You can think of the Grimoire as a basic template skill that you add your three chosen effects to.

Scripts explained for the ESO Scribing System
Each ESO Script holds an unique effect that you can apply to your skill. Scripts can be earned through the Scribing questline, daily quest rewards or purchased from the Scholarium and Infinite Archive Vendors.
There are three types of Scripts: Focus, Signature and Affix which are unlocked by doing the Luminary Wings questlines below:
- Focus scripts – Function: Damage type, healing, stun, pull etc. Unlocked after completing The Wing of the Gryphon
- Daily Delve quests
- Daily Mages Guild quests
- PvP Rewards for the Worthy
- Signature Scripts – Unique effect: magicka restore, immobilize, damage shield, status effects etc. Unlocked after completing The Wing of the Dragon
- Daily World Boss quests
- Daily Cyrodiil quests
- Daily Fighters Guild quests
- Mages Guild Script Chase
- Class Mastery Script Chase
- Affix Scripts – Final Benefit: major/minor buffs and debuffs. Unlocked after completing The Wing of the Netch
- World Event quests
- Daily Imperial City quests
- Daily Undaunted quests
Once a Script is in your inventory, you can consume it to permanently unlock that Script effect for the ESO Scribing system. Scripts are technically not account wide, but you are able to buy or loot a script on one of your characters and transfer it to your other characters by depositing it in your bank.
Script Drop Chance
100% Guaranteed Script drop from the first daily coffer of each different type of daily quest and a 25% chance for a repeated daily of that type for your account. Nine guaranteed Script drops per day. No duplicate Scripts will drop until you have received all on that character. You can use the achievements to keep track of the Scripts you own: Focus Script Mastery, Affix Script Mastery, Signature Script Mastery, A Signature with Class. You will need an addon to track alt characters scripts as achievements are account wide. All players, regardless of Gold Road ownership, have a very small chance to receive Scripts via world drops, which are unbound and tradeable.
Read the Daily Quest guide on ESO-HUB to locate all the Daily Quest Givers!
You are able to have a character that gets a guaranteed drop on a script since the drops are curated. Collect and use all other Scripts of that category except the one you want to farm and you will always get the missing script. As an example you could use all other Affix Scripts on that character except for the Heroism Script, therefore being able to get 3 Heroism Scripts per day from the three different Affix dailies.
ESO Focus Scripts
Focus Scripts add the main effect to your skill in the ESO Scribing system in the Gold Road Chapter. This might change the type of damage the skill does, or whether the ability targets enemies or allies. Focus Scripts also determine the cost of the ability and whether it takes Magicka or Stamina to use.
Focus Scripts will start dropping from the daily coffer below and can be bought from the vendors after you have unlocked the Sigil of the Luminary Gryphon on one character.

- Daily Mages Guild quests
- PvP Rewards for the Worthy

Luminous Ink for the Scribing System
Luminous Ink is the new crafting currency introduced in the Gold Road Chapter for the Scribing System. You will need Luminous Ink to complete the ESO Scribing process, sealing the magic within your chosen Grimoire and Scripts. Each Script added or changed on a Scribed Skill consumes one Luminous Ink.
Luminous Ink is not bound to your account so you are able to sell or send it to other players.
How to get Luminous Ink in ESO
Luminous Ink will not drop in the world until you have completed the necessary Luminary Wing and earned their sigil. After completing the wing on one character, all of your alt characters will be able to get Luminous Ink from its source. Luminous Ink in ESO drops from defeated enemies, harvesting crafting materials, treasure chests and heavy sacks.
Luminous ink now drops from Heavy Sacks and Chests (added in Update 43)
- 3 Luminous Ink is awarded after completing the Indrik, Gryphon, Dragon and Netch Luminary Wing questlines (12 total).
- After completing the quest “The Wing of the Indrik“, Luminous Ink will rarely drop from defeated enemies.
- After completing the quest “The Wing of the Netch“, Luminous Ink will rarely drop from harvesting crafting materials.
- After completing “The Wing of the Dragon” quest Luminous Ink can rarely be found in treasure chests.
- After completing “The Wing of the Gryphon” quest Luminous Ink can rarely be found in heavy sacks.
- You can buy the Luminous Ink from other players directly, or through the ESO Guild Trader system.
Best place to farm Luminous Ink from enemies
Any enemies that drop loot, can drop Luminous Ink as well. The best places to farm Luminous Ink in ESO will have loads of melee enemies that walk after you and you can kill them fast. Loot in ESO is shared with everyone who damages the enemies, but only drops for the best 12 dps so try to avoid crowded places like Alikir Dolmens. Boss monsters have a higher chance of dropping Luminous Ink
You can team up with other players to loot the same enemies within your render range without personally doing damage as long as there isn’t more than 12 players around.
In this ESO Grind Guide you can see many popular spots for grinding XP that will also work for Luminous Ink!
- Greenshade (No DLC required)
- Alik’r Desert (No DLC required)
- Coldharbour (No DLC required)
- Court of Contempt (No DLC required)
- Old Orsinium (Orsinium DLC)
- Rkindaleft (Orsinium DLC)
- Imperial City Sewers (Imperial City DLC)
- Skyreach Catacombs (Instanced, No DLC required)
- Spellscar (Craglorn, No DLC required)
- Forgotten Wastes (Vvardenfell, Morrowind)
Best Place to farm Luminous Ink from harvesting crafting materials
Any area that spawns loads of resource nodes is also good for farming Luminous Ink in ESO. Craglorn is regarded as the best place to farm Luminous Ink due to the expensive Fortified Nirncrux and Potent Nirncrux having a chance to drop, but this also makes the zone very crowded. Remember to slot the Plentiful Harvest Champion Point as it gives you chance to get double Luminous Ink drops.
Luminous Ink drops from all sources that are considered a “material node” therefore you will find them in backpacks and urns as those can drop waters for alchemy.
Best places to farm Luminous Ink in ESO
- Beginner Zones
- Base Game
- Craglorn
- Auridon
- The Hollow City (Mostly alchemy materials)
- Stormhaven
- Rivenspire
- DLC
Remember to slot the Master Gatherer and Plentiful Harvest Champion Points to get the most out of your farming!

Alt Characters – how it works
Alternative Character in ESO or alt character is a term for all of your characters that isn’t your main character. Your main character is usually the one you play and like the most, but some people don’t have a main character at all and instead play equally on multiple characters.
ESO Scribing System account wide unlocks – only need to complete once
Completing the Luminary Wings will unlock Sigils, that are account wide, but what does it actually mean? As an example, when you unlock Sigil of the Indrik, this means all of your characters will get Luminous Ink from monsters without doing any Scribing Quests.
You only need to do the Luminary Wing questlines once and all of your alts are able get Luminous Ink and Scripts!
Focus, Signature and Affix Scripts won’t drop from the daily quests until you complete it’s wing mentioned below. Once you’ve completed a Luminary Wing you can start grinding scripts for all of the characters you want to use the ESO Scribing System on. You will need an addon to track alt characters scripts as achievements are account wide.
You DO NOT need to complete any Scribing Quests on your alt character to be able to earn Luminous Ink and Scripts IF one of your characters has completed all of the Luminary Wings.
Account wide unlocks
- Luminous Ink rarely drops when defeating monsters for all of your characters.

ESO Scribing System character specific unlocks – need to do on all characters
You will be able to get Luminous Ink and Scripts on all characters immediately after you’ve completed the Luminary Wings mentioned above on one character. You will not be able to access the Scribing Altar to Scribe Skills until you complete the Second Era of Scribing, Tutorial Quest. The Scribing Tutorial Quest takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.
The biggest ESO Scribing Grind comes from acquiring all the different Scripts for your alt characters. Script drops are curated, which means when you consume a script, that character will not get the same script again. As an example; you can consume all Focus Scripts on one of your alt characters except Focus Script: Pull making it so that only the Pull Script will ever drop for that character. This way you can farm a specific Script for all of your characters.
Character Specific unlocks

- Magic Damage, Lingering Torment and Breach Scripts
- Requires completion of Tutorial Quest: Second Era of Scribing on every character

The ESO Scribing Vendor (Scholarium Merchant) Chronicler Firandil prices change when you’ve bought the Grimoire or Script on one character.

1. Learning the truth about The Crow
Major story spoilers ahead.
Once you’ve completed all the other Luminary Wings, the Crow will perch in front of the previously unmarked door and let you know that she is the last Luminary and will lend you her power. You will invite Votary Nahlia to this trial as Ulfsild’s Echo of the Final Trial instructs.
2. Taking the vows
You must complete a ritual by taking a vow of Loyalty, Charity and Mystery. You will find the answers in the Fable of the Crow and below:
- Loyalty I vow to protect those I care about.
- Charity I vow to be compassionate to others to the end of my days.
- Mystery I vow to be curious about what lies ahead.
Dispelling the last ward, will reveal the door to the Wing of the Crows domain, which is shaped after Shalidor’s Labyrinthian.
3. The Final Trial: Labyrinthian
In the Final, You will need to navigate through the Labyrinthian. Below you can find the answers to the puzzles.
- First room: First Light the Flame of the Indrik, then light the Flame of the Gryphon.
- Second Room: Use focus points and keep dispelling wards while moving on the patch the Fox makes.
- Third Room: Navigate through the maze. Dispel the ward to continue through the middle.
4. The Last trial and the Crows Sigil
The Crow now wants you to demonstrate your power by killing the Chimera: Aut’arioth, Inheritor’s Bane. During the fight the chimera will disappear and you will have to use focus points to dispel wards for it to come back.
You find out that Ulfsild used all her power to create another Luminary, The Crow. The Scribing rite flashed the Archmage’s mind and so The Crow is Ulfsild. The Crow says Votary Nahlia should look after the Scholarium and become its librarian, it’s scribing master.
The Sigil of the Crow can be found in Eastmarch, along the waters edge. You will find an echo of a much older Ulfsild and found out she took years to recover from creating the Luminary.
5. Empowering the altar

Is ESO Scribing the Same as Spellcrafting?
Spellcrafting has been high on the list of many ESO players’ most desired features for ESO for many years, and many are asking if Scribing is simply another name for Spellcrafting.
The best answer to this question is “not quite”. Spellcrafting in other games like TES IV: Oblivion gave players a great deal of free reign to reshape the magic system and create spells as they saw fit. Scribing on the other hand gives you some free reign, but you must stay within certain constraints, you cannot freely pick and choose any effects from the game and mash them together, you can only work with what is offered by the Grimoires and Scripts available in the game.
Responding to questions on the matter, Zenimax explicitly stated that Scribing is not Spellcrafting, but a “precursor to Spellcrafting”. There are two interpretations of this statement – either this means that Scribing is a test run and full Spellcrafting is going to be added eventually, or it is merely referring to the lore surrounding Spellcrafting – ESO is set around 1,000 years before the other Elder Scrolls games, and the mages of Tamriel haven’t yet attained sufficient mastery over magic to devise entirely new spells as they see fit.
ESO Skill Styling System- Skill Transmog
The Gold Road will also finally add Skills Styling for ESO as part of the Scribing system. Styling will allow you to change the looks of Skills visual FX. That means you could turn a red fire breath into a purple fire breath. There will be 22 styles available when the Gold Road launches.
