ESO: Subclassing System Redefines Character Customization in the 2025 Season

The 2025 Season of ESO (The Elder Scrolls Online) marks a pivotal moment in the game’s evolution, bringing with it a transformative new feature: the Subclassing System. Included as part of the base game and available to all players, this system significantly expands character customization and gameplay flexibility.
With the introduction of subclassing, players are empowered to take character personalization to an entirely new level. This innovative system allows adventurers to incorporate class skill lines from other classes into their current builds, enabling a level of creativity and customization previously unseen in ESO. Whether you’re looking to diversify your combat strategies or explore alternative playstyles without creating a new character, subclassing offers unprecedented versatility.
How the ESO Subclassing System Works
Subclassing in ESO (The Elder Scrolls Online) functions as an account-wide system—once unlocked, it becomes accessible to all characters on your account. To maintain each class’s core identity, players must retain one of their original class skill lines (e.g., a Sorcerer must keep at least one Sorcerer line). The remaining two class-based skill lines can be replaced with those from any other class in the game.
This includes access to all relevant active abilities, morphs, and passive skills from the substituted lines, providing substantial opportunities for both hybrid builds and optimized specializations.
According to ZeniMax Online Studios (ZOS), the system introduces over 3,000 possible skill line combinations, offering players a remarkably broad spectrum of creative and strategic options.
Subclassing System Limitations
While the ESO Subclasses System offers a high degree of customization, a few key limitations are in place to maintain balance:
-
Players must retain one original class skill line; all three cannot be replaced.
-
Subclassing permits the selection of complete skill lines only—individual skills cannot be selected independently from different classes.
These restrictions ensure that while subclassing adds powerful new dimensions to character building, it does so without disrupting the overall structure of the game’s class system.
We will be adding an ESO Subclassing Build for each class on this website after we have tested combinations thoroughly on the test server once available.
