Soulframe Waste Bear Fable Guide – How to Unlock Bromius

One of the most important additions to Soulframe in the Preludes 11 update was the new Waste Bear Fable, an atmospheric and story-rich quest that rewards the player with access to the new Bromius Pact (a new class) and unlocks the new Neath’uns dungeon type.
However, the Waste Bear Fable can be difficult to find, and it’s easy to get lost or confused during the quest. This guide will show you how to start the Waste Bear quest and provide you with a full walkthrough in case you are stuck.

How to Start the Waste Bear Fable in Soulframe
To start the Waste Bear Fable, you must first have recruited Verminia the Rat Witch.
When you have done that, head to the location marked on the map below, just north of Borro’s Mine.
You have to find a tree wounded by bear claws and leaking sap. Interact with the tree, and Verminia will speak to you from the Nightfold, requesting that you come and speak with her about what you found.
Travel to the Nightfold (hold TAB on PC) and speak with Verminia. After conversing with her, you will see a vision and begin the Waste Bear Fable. Exit Nightfold to get started. See the next section if you want a walkthrough for the quest.
Waste Bear Fable Walkthrough
In this section, you will find a full step-by-step walkthrough for the Waste Bear Fable in Soulframe.
Step 1 – Rendezvous with Verminia
Exit the Nightfold and open your map. You will see a wide area marked on the map in which you can find Verminia. It can be a little tricky to find her because this area is heavily forested, but head to the centre of the circle and you should be in roughly the right spot.
Once you find Verminia, speak with her and she will temporarily transform your sparrow guide into a flying rat, which she calls Floppet. She encourages you to use the guide to find your way to the Wevetwood. If you didn’t already know, you can summon your guide (press G on PC) to get a hint about where you need to go next.
Step 2 – To Wevetwood!
You now have to explore the Wevetwood, using your minimap and guide to help you find the way. You may encounter some Ode’n enemies and cursed sproutfolk (a new enemy type added in Preludes 11) along the way.
The game doesn’t tell you exactly what to look for, so it’s quite common for players to get lost here.
You should head directly to the dark green area in the middle of marked circle on your map. Now, check the damaged trees (the ones leaking sap) until you find the tree pictured below. Interact with it and you will see another vision. When the vision ends, the tree will start falling towards you, so you should get out of the way.
Step 3 – Where grow the Elder Voicing Trees?
Follow your guide again, and it will lead you to a magical purple barrier. There is a tear in the barrier, and when you interact with it you are shown a music sheet with three missing notes. This is a clue that you need to find three more Elder Trees.
If you open your map again, you will see three areas marked. Head to each of those three areas and find another damaged tree leaking sap in each one. When you’ve found them all, return to the tear in the magical barrier (use your guide to help you find it again).
Interact with the tear in the barrier and play the song that appears at the bottom of your screen. This will bring down the barrier, allowing you to proceed.
Defeat the enemies inside the newly accessed area, and then interact with the big metal container. You will see another vision, continuing the Waste Bear’s story.
Verminia will appear and speak to you again, and then the next objective appears.
Step 4 – Save the seed from Mendicant clutches
Use your map and guide to find the way into the Mendicant’s waste, a very corrupted area of land on the shoreline to the north. When you reach the correct area, Verminia will appear again and make a comment about it.
Keep following your guide. You will be intercepted twice by Mendicant Knights. Defeat them all and continue as normal. After the first fight with Mendicant Knights, take care not to miss the treasure chest in the water.
Keep following the path, and you will reach the blue area pictured below.
Step 5 – Wazzard of Wastes
Wazzard of Wastes is the Mendicant living in this area. He will spawn when you get close to the glowing blue area. This is the first of two boss fights during the Waste Bear fable.
At the beginning of combat, he saps energy from your character, taking away all three of your combat abilities. The boss isn’t particularly difficult, but he does have a few mechanics to note:
- Sweeping Ranged Attack – He shoots a very wide linear AoE towards your character. Avoid this by quickly sprinting to the left or right before it reaches you. I was able to avoid the damage by dodging or blocking it, but I think that is a bug that will be fixed sooner or later.
- Corrupted Tree – The Mendicant disappears and is replaced by a corrupted tree. If you look up, you will see some coloured acorns hanging from the branch. Hitting these with any ranged attack will knock them down and allow you to reclaim one of your abilities that was stolen from you at the beginning of the fight. Purple thorns will fall from the sky at the same time, so aim quickly and don’t stand still for too long.
- Giant Bugs – The Mendicant splits into several giant bugs. They are very easy to fight, just make sure you don’t get surrounded by them. Kill them all to make the Mendicant come back.
When you defeat the Mendicant, the corrupted tree will sprout from the ground again. Interact with it and press F (on PC) when the moving circle is within the marked area. This will pull the seed from the tree, teleporting you out of the Mendicant Waste and returning any abilities that you didn’t win back during the fight.
Step 6 – Down… To The Neath’uns
After returning from the Mendicant Wastes, Verminia will speak to you again and give you a new objectives.
Now you need to descend into the new dungeon added in Preludes 11, the Neath’uns. Use your guide to find the entrance – an underground passage overgrown with tree roots.
In the first room of the dungeon, you’ll be attacked by more of the bugs from earlier. They are very weak, so take them out and then proceed further into the dungeon. You’ll soon come face-to-face with Bromius for the first time. Above the cave where you see him, there is a glowing purple rune on the wall. Hit it with a ranged attack, and water will spray out and water the nearby vines. The vines will grow into a bridge, allowing you to cross the gap. Keep looking out for more of these purple runes, as they are often required to cross gaps in this dungeon.
Keep exploring the dungeon until you reach the huge open room, pictured below. Hit the purple rune to the right of the entrance to proceed.
To gain access to the hill in the middle of the room, look out for more purple runes to hit. Each time you hit one, it will create a new vine bridge.
When you’re on the central hill, climb to the very top by walking on the mushrooms. You will find another purple rune. Vines block it, but you can easily solve this by walking further along the ledge and hitting it from the side. As usual, another vine bridge will be created.
Cross the next bridge, and it will lead you to another giant mushroom. From there, you can see one final purple rune. Shoot it to create the final bridge, allowing you to cross to the other side of the room.
Follow the cave to reach the next part of the quest. You’ll know you are going the right way because Bromius will give you a little jumpscare. Proceed further down the cave and you’ll start hearing the voice of Synod. You’ll then have another vision, but this one is lucid and you can control your character.
Simply walk to the centre of the room during the vision and then watch the cutscene. This time, when the vision ends, you will be face-to-face with Bromius. In his fully corrupted form, he will be the final boss of the Waste Bear fable.
Step 7 – Final Boss
The Waste Bear is the corrupted version of Bromius, and he is the final boss of this fable. He makes for a significantly tougher fight than the Mendicant we fought earlier.
The Waste Bear doesn’t have many boss battle mechanics; the difficulty mainly stems from his fairly high HP pool and tendency to suddenly charge at you.
Some attacks to watch out for:
- Claw swipe – The Waste Bear swipes with his left or right paw in a wide sweeping attack. Dodge backwards or parry this attack.
- Ground slam vines – The boss slams the ground, and thick vines shoot up from the ground in a straight line, damaging you if you linger. Dodge sideways when you see him slamming the ground. This requires pretty good reactions to avoid, but luckily doesn’t do much damage if it hits you.
- Jump – If you are not in melee range of the boss, he will sometimes jump towards you, dealing damage on contact if you don’t get out of the way. This also causes an earthquake – rocks will fall from the ceiling which do more damage if they hit you.
- Pounce – When the boss reaches HP thresholds, your character will be stunned and the bear pounces on you. Spam F (or whichever button is indicated) to break free. Each time this happens, one of the Waste Bear’s heads are destroyed.
The battle is a rinse and repeat of the mechanics mentioned above.
When he is beaten, the Waste Bear sits on his back. On Verminia’s signal, activate your guide. This time, you will get to control Floppet. Fly into the bear’s mouth. You have to complete a simple obstacle course, avoiding obstructions as you fly through the bear’s stomach. At the end, fly into the acorn to grab it, which will end the boss battle.
Step 8 – Bromius
You will find yourself in an empty area of the nightfold, with a glowing orb ahead of you. Walk to the orb and interact with it to plant the acorn. Play the indicated tune.
There will now be another cutscene to begin wrapping up the quest.
After the cutscene, pick up an acorn and carry it to the spot where Floppet is hovering. Plant the acorn in the ground. Repeat this another time.
You can now speak to Bromius to wrap up the quest. This will unlock the Bromius Pact (a new class), but there is one more step you need to take before you can use it (see below).
How to Get the Bromius Pact
While completing the Waste Bear Fable unlocks the Bromius Pact, you still need to craft it before you can play it.
Go to the Nightfold and talk to Tuvalkane (here’s how to recruit Tuvalkane if you haven’t already). You need your Bond with Tuvalkane to be at least level 3 (increase the Bond by crafting items).
Find Bromius in the Assemble menu. Ensure you have gathered the required items, then craft the Pact.
Required items:
- 55 Scrap Steel (looted from weapon racks)
- 15 Moranite (looted from rare treasure chests or purchased from Avakot’s Gots)
- 15 River Pearls (found by riverbanks or purchased from Avakot’s Gots)
- 5,000 Dracs (dropped by most enemies, found in most breakable containers and treasure chests)
It will take 26 hours to finish crafting, so come back tomorrow to try out your new Pact!
