Grave Walker Overview

Grave Walker is the easiest Colossus in The First Descendant, and the first one that most players will fight. It is a huge six-legged entity, somewhat resembling a crab in its appearance, and is heavily outfitted with gatling guns and missiles. A much weaker version of this boss is also found in the tutorial, although that boss is so weak that you don’t really need any strategy to beat it.

Grave Walker serves as an introduction to fighting Colossi for players, and indeed the game’s main story leads players to fight against one fairly early on.

It’s recommended that you are at least level 10 before fighting Grave Walker. While it’s the easiest boss in the game, it can still be a bit problematic for some players, especially if you’re trying to solo it.

Grave Walker Lore

The Grave Walker is the first Colossus that humanity has ever managed to defeat. Through the study of its remains, various research endeavors have brought about rapid advancements for humanity. The prototype of weapons used by humans began to be developed, taking inspiration from the Grave Walker’s design.

Despite extensive research over a long period of time, the Colossus still remains a mysterious and enigmatic existence with many unanswered questions. The Grave Walker has been discovered in various forms, leading to speculation about whether they are simply variations in appearance of the same entity or if they are derived from a common origin like siblings.

How to Beat Grave Walker in the First Descendant

The first step towards beating Grave Walker is to prepare your character properly. For that, you need to keep the following information in mind:

Grave Walker attacks with Fire damage – Add modules to your character to make you more resistant to Fire. This will help you survive the boss’ attacks.
Grave Walker is resistant to Fire and Lightning damage – avoid using weapons and attacks that deal these types of damage, if possible. They will be less effective. If you have Modules on your weapons to add Fire or Lightning ATK, replace them with something else.
Grave Walker is very weak to Chill damage – Use Chill attacks as much as possible. If your Descendant has Chill skills (like Viessa) that’s helpful, but not essential. If possible, add Weapon Modules to add Chill ATK to your attacks.

As a general tip for fighting all colossi in TFD, you should make sure you have enough defensive Modules added to your character. There’s no precise guideline for this, and it is partially a matter of preference and playstyle. But you should have at least a couple of modules that do things like increase your HP, Shield and DEF.

Once you’ve got your character finished, it’s time to move onto the Grave Walker fight itself.

Grave Walker Colossus Weakpoints

To begin with, note that Grave Walker has the following Destructible and Removable Parts:

Destructible:

Sensor
Helmet
Core Cover

Destructible when Frenzied:

Knees

Removable (With Grappling Hook after damaging the parts):

Brain
Shell
Core

When possible, target your attacks at the Weakpoints mentioned above. Press TAB to see them more easily – this will cause them to be temporarily highlighted. Attacking these will deal extra damage to Grave Walker. Successfully removing the Removable parts is optional, but doing so will temporarily stun the boss. To remove them, keep shooting them until they are highlighted in yellow, then use your Grappling hook to grab onto them.

Grave Walker Attacks and Mechanics

Grave Walker uses the following attacks and mechanics in battle:

Gatling Guns – Grave Walker has two Gatling Guns. It will target the player it feels most threatened by with these guns. This is intended as suppressing fire, and you should take cover if this is targeted at you. If you cannot get to cover then strafing or dodging sideways should also be sufficient. The guns fire in bursts, so once you’ve learned the rhythm of their firing, you can duck in and out of cover between each burst to do more DPS.
Homing Missiles – Grave Walker has two missile launchers on its head. These will be fired in barrages that home in on a particular player. The homing is not too accurate – you can easily avoid them by running or dodging away. But if you stand still or move too slowly, these will hit you for a severe amount of damage.
Mortars – Sometimes, Grave Walker instead fires its missiles up on a high trajectory, effectively turning them into mortars. They will rain down in a wide area – you can see where they wil land by looking out for the red-orange areas.
Roly-Poly – Throughout the fight, Roly-Poly adds will spawn. They look like much smaller versions of Grave Walker. They slowly follow players and will shoot them if they get close, but otherwise, they don’t contribute much to the fight. They drop ammo when they are destroyed, so if you’re running low, look for them.
Charged Blast – Grave Walker can create balls of energy in its arms. These will then be hurled towards a player, knocking them back and dealing quite a lot of damage if you are hit.
Frenzy – After taking enough damage, the boss becomes immobile and begins glowing orange. It will now attack more aggressively, launching heavier missile barrages. During this phase, the only Weak Point is the Grave Walker’s knees, which will protrude from its legs. After some time, the boss will exit this phase and recover its mobility.

This fairly simple set of mechanics allows players to learn the ropes of fighting Colossi without being in too much danger. However, you can still get killed quite easily when fighting Grave Walker if you are careless and/or didn’t prepare properly.
